Wheels for SUVs: What to consider

The automotive industry has been undergoing a significant transformation for several years now. Traditional concepts are being re-evaluated or reinterpreted, leading to an ever-expanding range of "crossover" models.

At the forefront of this trend are SUVs, which come in a wide variety of forms across all vehicle classes and are incredibly popular. But what should you particularly consider when purchasing wheels for SUVs?

It’s up to you

Not all SUVs are created equal. Beyond their higher stance, SUVs differ significantly, particularly in terms of their drivetrain. While "classic" SUVs tend to be considerably heavier, this isn't necessarily the case for compact SUVs. How you intend to use the vehicle also plays a role.

A front-wheel-drive, compact "soft-roader" bought for its easier entry and higher seating position is unlikely to ever tackle rough terrain. In contrast, a full-size SUV with ample power and all-wheel drive might. This should definitely be taken into account when choosing wheels.

Not all wheel designs are suitable for genuine off-road use – much like you wouldn't wear hiking boots to the opera or Balenciaga pumps on a hike. If you want to be on the safe side, you might consider wheels specifically designed for large premium SUVs, such as the AEZ Leipzig. These are particularly robust and have a load capacity of up to 1,000 kg in the 10.5x22 inch size.

Let’s talk about “wheel load capacity”

A crucial factor in selecting SUV wheels is their load capacity, which must support the weight of the vehicle. This value can be found in the vehicle's registration document and should be the first thing you check when choosing wheels. The AEZ rim configurator offers a more convenient option.

Most AEZ wheel models come with ECE or VTA approvals for specific vehicle types, making registration unnecessary. Depending on local regulations, the wheels can then be simply fitted.

Robust rims for tough times

Even if it doesn't seem likely at the moment, winter is guaranteed to come – and with it, the question: Which wheels will best withstand the potentially harsh conditions, and when should you consider switching them? The simple answer is that AEZ wheels are particularly well-protected thanks to their special SRC coating (Salt & Sun Resistant).

This involves using various paints and techniques to protect the wheel surface and the deeper layers of paint from environmental influences. The extremely durable surface not only provides winter protection but also shields the wheels from the sun and prevents unsightly scratches. The right time to switch is easy to remember: Between October and Easter, cold temperatures are expected in many countries, so you should prepare your wheels – both rims and tyres – accordingly.
